Barlactico
"Barlactico" is a 2D animated short film about a small saloon bar located on an asteroid in space, where a large octopus bartender serves his intergalactic patrons. Most of his regulars are of the unsavory variety, but one day a small unassuming alien kid wanders into the bar. Surrounded by large and burly aliens several times his size, the small alien finds himself struggling to avoid being trampled. In his efforts to avoid being flattened, he accidentally bumps into another alien, but since he is so small they think that another patron had bumped into them. This misunderstanding accidentally starts a big bar brawl full. Oblivious to the mayhem unfolding behind him, he attempts to climb up a bar stool to order himself a drink. The bartender watches his patrons quickly destroy his beloved bar and becomes enraged, using his tentacles to grab everyone he can and toss them into space. Finally, the alien kid is able to climb up onto the stool and makes a simple request... a glass of milk. Happy to finally have a polite and well-mannered patron, the bartender happily obliges to his request and the two of them enjoy a glass of milk together. This film was inspired by slapstick comedy cartoons, westerns, and sci-fi films such as Star Wars. Stylistically Cowboy Bebop and The Amazing World of Gumball were the biggest sources of inspiration for their color palettes and animation styles respectively. Created by the collaborative efforts of Dina Al-Hasan, Alejandra Borerro, Juan Davila, Madeleynne Flores, Kevin Garcia, and Veronica Hernandez, "Barlactico" was made as a part of the University of Central Florida School of Visual Arts Animation Workshop course. This short was developed over sixteen weeks and students were assigned the task of choosing their group mates and developing the concept for their short, with a minimum length of two minutes. The students then conceptualized and produced everything in the final project.
